The Science Of Happiness

I was recently shown a Youtube video entitled ''The Science of Happiness, An Experiment In Gratitude." In this video, a group of scientists conducted a survey to determine contestants current level of happiness. The contestants were then asked to close their eyes and think of someone who has played an influential role in their life. They then had to write as much as they could on why this person has impacted their life positively. Once the contestants had finished their note, they were asked to call the individual to whom they had written and read what they had written about them. The study showed that when we express our gratitude our level of happiness increases between four and nineteen percent. I am going to test this for myself and see if their study actually works by writing my Mother a letter that I will later share with her.

To my beloved Mother,
I just wanted to take a moment and let you know how truly special you are to me. You have always put Dad and I before yourself no matter what the situation is. You know how to cheer others up even when you are in the worst mood possible. No matter what time of day or night I know I can call on you to help me through anything. Your advice is something that I cherish the most about you. Your giving and compassionate nature pushes me to want to become a better person everyday. I love you more than words can describe and one day I hope that I can repay you for all the happiness you have brought into my life.

With love always,

To Ban Or Not To Ban

Is it acceptable to silence a voice that begs to be heard? Is it acceptable to shelter our youth from exploring their natural creativity? Is it acceptable to ban books? When the question "Is it acceptable to ban literature?" was presented to multiple writers the response was unanimous. Throughout the short two minute video, Banned Books Week: 13 Authors Speak Out, various authors spoke on how the practice of banning books only was only going to hurt the identity of the human race in the long run. Writer Walter Mosley stated that,"banning books is like banning thoughts, banning ideas, banning people." I thoroughly agree with Walter. I too believe that by banning books you are disabling one's given right to think creatively and express oneself with the help of a talented writer. By banning books, it is taking away other's ability to expand knowledge and opinions on a variety of subjects. The practice of banning books not only hurts the readers but also the writer. The writer has just poured their heart, soul and self into this piece for the reader to enjoy and feel the same emotions that they once felt. I believe that literature is a form of expression. A form of expression that does not have rules, boundaries or delegators who decide what is valid and what is not. You may not agree with the opinion expressed in each piece of literature but you should respect it enough to allow others to appreciate it and see whether or not they feel the same way as you.  One day, I hope that the practice of banning books will be a thing of the past so that everyone will be able to enjoy literature in the way that it was intended to be adored.

The Key To Success

While on Youtube the other day, I came across an interesting channel known as Ted Talks. I proceed to watch many of their videos until one in particular caught my attention. The video was entitled Angela Lee Duckworth: The key to success? Grit. In this short six minute video, Angela discusses her theory of “grit” in the New York state school system. By definition “grit” is courage and resolve; strengthen of character. Angela explained that students test scores did not fully demonstrate the potential of each student. She came to the conclusion that we need to be teaching our students to set goals for long periods of time, goals that will make them better in the bigger picture. By motivating our youth we will create a stronger, more powerful future for the generations to come. I could not agree more with Angela on this. I too believe that the best time to prepare for the future is now. I believe that the teachers, guardians and friends should encourage youth to make long term goals to help them stay motivated. Having something to work towards helps students to work hard and become better versions of themselves. I strongly believe that success is not derived from IQ but how willing you are to work.

Not Your Typical Writer

How is one expected to introduce oneself when they are unsure who they truly are. Sure, they can give the obvious superficial information and hope for the best but, how do they get across who they really are? It is an impossible and dreadful task to ask a seventeen year old high school student. Luckily for me, I know a few things about myself. My name is Megan C. Kurtz. I was born in Guelph, Ontario to two wonderful, extraordinary, loving and supportive parents. I have a passion for education and learning which fuels my drive to become an elementary school teacher. I have a big heart that always tries to find the best in people even through in this world it is sometimes a challenge. One day I will spontaneously pack up a few prized possessions and set my sights for the continent of South America. Like the majority of the young population nowadays I am confused of who I currently am but know who I want to be. Through this blog I will be sharing personal writings, stories and other information that will help you get to know me better so please enjoy and stay tuned for more to come!
